History

Kohima is on the Battle Honours of my old regiment, the forbear regiments, one of which was The Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment were there and I find it absolutely amazing that the good old beeb has decided to omit that fact. 420 men of the 4th battalion RWK were part of the 1,500 combat troops that held out against the 15,500 strong Japanese force sent to take Kohima.
L/CPL John Pennington Harman 4th Battalion RWK was awarded a Victoria Cross (posthumously) for single handedly destroying two enemy machine gun posts, he was killed attempting to get back to his lines after destroying the second machine gun post. The 4th Battalion RWK suffered 200 killed or seriously wounded in the battle that lasted from 4th April until 22nd June 1944.
