Spring barley.

Have you had enough rain? 3 inches here in may, last Sunday when I went to Malvern it looked pretty dry, maize crops were well ahead of the crops around here
Not really. Had less than 2 inches in May but was a regular drip feed. Will need the same through June. It was planted in decent moisture so the roots will have been following the moisture down as it dried out earlier although it was starting to suffer about 3 weeks ago.

We got far better results with spring barley after being able to control most grass weeds using winter barley residual off-label.
Is that still a thing?
Here it could out yield winter barley in a good year and was far less troubled by rabbits if you didn't sow it too early.
About second week of April was usually best then it would emerge late April and romp away - in theory.

I think we grew one called Wagon from our own saved seed for at least ten years.

Now you tell me 🙄 I got some new seed last year as I thought 4 years farm saved wagon was getting a bit risky. It did have a tendency to lose its heads if the weather delayed cutting. My new "prospect" seems better in that respect

When we grew it best results were generally from sowing second week of April, here the concern sowing early is it just sitting there for days on end in chilly conditions while under siege from every pest imaginable as there aren't many fields cropped to 'share the burden'.
So it wants to come up and romp away fast as possible.
We had a ten acre field one year where the crows could work out of sight and I think they eventually had every last bit as it came up gradually - redrilled it about now and it still did Ok.

Here's mine, warts and all....

Drilled 5th April, looking OK except where I ran all over it top dressing in less than ideal conditions.

Drilled over Easter, AMG is going to be a problem, not much I can do about it now, as have decided to do a post em herbicide.

And this was drilled on 20th April. Always seems to take 7-10 days to emerge. Never had the mythical 3 day emergence often quoted in " Another place ".

I'm running over the ground too many times I think. P/H......drilling.......top dressing ( I like to put a bit of fert in the seedbed ).......rolling........sometimes running through with a cultivator too. A re think for next season.
